T-Mobile G2 is official, speedy HSPA+ and Google Voice inside

The T-Mobile G1 finally got a proper sequel - the T-Mobile G2 just went official, going on pre-order later this month. The Android 2.2 powered phone has HSPA+ connectivity and tight integration with Google Voice.

You've heard the specs before, but here they are again - this time official. The T-Mobile G2 has a 3.7" touchscreen and runs Froyo, so Flash 10.1 is go. It's powered by a Snapdragon MSM7230 CPU running at 800MHz (less then the initially rumored 1GHz).

The camera on the back of the G2 is the popular 5MP camera with 720p video recording. There's 4GB built-in memory and an 8GB microSD card pre-installed.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the slide-out QWERTY. The other G2 - the T-Mobile G2 Touch a.k.a. HTC Hero - didn't have one, but the T-Mobile G2 has, making it a true successor to the G1. It's hinged in a fashion remotely similar to the G1, though the press release is unclear whether it tilts or not (rumors say No).

Anyway, you also have Swype pre-installed for fast text input even without having to slide out the keyboard. There are even dedicated Quick keys for instant access to shortcuts and apps.

Yep, speed is important to the T-Mobile G2 - it boasts HSPA+ connectivity that T-Mobile advertise as 4G speeds, for speeds up to 21Mbps (in theory anyway). If you're a fan of Google Voice there's good news too - the G2 is tightly integrated with the service.

Limited quantities of the T-Mobile G2 will be available later this month for pre-order in the US and more info is coming soon (sign up for updates here). Rumor has it, it will be 200 US dollars with contract or 500 dollars without one.

Sony Ericsson Yendo priced at 169 euro, to be called Yizo in the US

The full touch Walkman phone Sony Ericsson W150i Yendo was announced back in June and now it's almost ready to start selling. For 169 euro. Meanwhile, the device paid the FCC a short visit and as it turns out, it will be called Yizo in the US.

The Yendo which first showed up a few months back is getting ready to hit the stores. We spotted it on the Phone House Spain website and right under its image and name there was its price. This just about solves one of the final remaining mysteries about the Yendo. The device is priced at 169 euro, SIM-free.

Along with the photos of the Yendo exterior and internals the FCC website also holds the Sony Ericsson W150a manual. And according to it, the American version of the W150i Yendo will be called Sony Ericsson W150a Yizo.

Just like the Yendo, the Yizo will come with a 2.6 capacitive touchscreen of QVGA resolution and Walkman logos all over its body. On the back there will be a 2-megapixel fixed-focus snapper and on the top - a 3.5mm audio jack.

As for the W150 user interface, it will be quite reminiscent of the one found in the Android-running Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and X10 mini pro. However, unlike those two, the music-centric Yizo will lack smartphone capabilities.

There is no information on the Sony Ericsson Yizo launch date or price tag.

Sony Ericsson A8i

We're actually surprised it's taken that long for Sony Ericsson to join China Mobile's TD-SCDMA bandwagon (potentially 554 million accounts!), but as the old Chinese proverb goes:

"it's never too late to fix the fence, even if you've already lost a few sheep." The new Ophone 2.0 handset in question is the A8i, which bears much resemblance to the oh-so-popular Xperia X10 (also available in China) except for the smaller 3.5-inch touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera, CMMB mobile TV feature, and the seemingly missing Timescape plus Mediascape apps. No prices announced just yet, but we're told that both the "Titanium Black" and "Shiny White" editions will be heavily subsidized when they come out in October.

Motorola Defy: Android 2.1 goes rugged with water, dust and scratch resistance

Remeber the Motorola i1? Moto has just added its second rugged(ish) Android handset in the 3.7-inch Gorilla Glass-fronted Defy. It's dust-, scratch-, impact-, and water-resistant. Matching up to the IP67 durability spec means it's expected to resist

being submersed in up to a meter of water for up to half an hour -- making it a pretty awesome option for taking your Android to the beach, 854 x 480 is your screen resolution, backed up by an OMAP 3610 chip running at 800MHz (there had to be some tradeoffs, right?). Android 2.1 is another slight disappointment, we're not clear on why Froyo had to be left off the table, but at least Motorola has bundled Swype as the default input mechanism. Should be a boon for some, we suppose. The Defy is expected to launch across Europe in Q4 2010.
