BlackBerry PlayBook HSPA+ and LTE Flavours Announced

Today at Mobile World Congress 2011, RIM announced two new 4G-ish varieties of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. In the second half of the year, there will be one PlayBook that runs on LTE and Wi-Fi, and another that runs on HSPA+ and Wi-Fi, in addition to the WiMAX version headed to Sprint.

The rest of the specs on either version stay the same: the 7-inch 1024 x 600 display, the 5 megapixel camera on the back and 3 megapixel camera on the front, the dual-core 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, and new operating system built for multitasking and multimedia. The news is somewhat expected, seeing as RIM is the type to support as many networks as possible, and LTE and HSPA+ are far more global standards than WiMAX. It’s too bad no carriers stepped up to the plate and announced that they would be selling the LTE or HSPA+ PlayBook, but I think it’s safe to assume T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon will all be biting sooner or later.

Their successors, ingeniously titled the Droid 3 and Droid X 2, have seemingly made an appearance over at HowardForums, courtesy of longtime forum member wnrussell.

He's also kindly provided imagery of a heretofore unknown device, called the Targa, which promises Verizon 4G LTE and has a protrusion on its rear that looks to be dedicated to accommodating an outsized camera sensor. It reminds us most of Motorola's XT720, though it sports a chrome outline to its body similar to what you see above on the purported Droid 3. Actually, the Nokia N10 MeeGo phone might become real in a matter of months, so it’s a bit unfair to call this design a concept. The idea of the phone below belongs to Peter Lackman, who created the Nokia N10, based on Nokia and Intel’s jointly developed platform.

No specs list sadly, but we know the handset comes with a huge screen (4 inches maybe?), the 12MP camera on the N8 plus quad LED flash, HDMI and a 4 row tilt hinge QWERTY keyboard. NFC is also included and there’s a nifty video showing the MeeGo UI running on the concept right here.

Can’t really say what’s lacking from this handset… Gigs of internal memory? WiMAX? A projector? What else?

Toshiba's 10.1-Inch tablet is getting a spot in Amazon's marketplace before it even gets a name. Thosiba Tablet will feature the Android Honeycomb OS, NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core mobile processor, 5 MP rear- and 2 MP front-facing cameras, an SD card slot, and ports for USB, mini-USB and HDMI.

Computational capability is supported dual core processor Nvidia Tegra 2.
Tablet is equipped with two cameras, each with 5 MP camera on the back and a 2 MP camera in front.

LG Optimus 3D

Glory be the LG Optimus 3D. Okay, we'll get right to it: the Optimus 3D is kinda kitschy, but at the same time fun, inevitable on a mobile device, and still a great conversation piece.

The 4.3-inch glasses-free 3D display's effect in games, film, and even the UI is pretty convincing using the set's applied parallax barrier technology, which is otherwise unnoticeable while the effect is off. Best bit? You can film your own 3D videos using the dual cameras on the back then watch them on your 3D set via HDMI. The Optimus is by no means a tiny set, though, still pretty comfy when held.

Material choices are top notch -- as we'd expect hope for in a high end device -- and as you'll see in the vid, it is plenty fast with no lag getting in the way of the little demo we had. So why not take a few minutes to admire the pics and videos (which unfortunately will be very flat for your eyes) won't you?

T-Mobile Sidekick 4G in the wild, made by Samsung?

Do you know how much I loved the original Sidekick? Seriously — Picture me spreading my arms REALLY, REALLY far apart, as if I’m bragging about the size of a fish I caught. That’s how much I loved the original Sidekick. It was, for the most part, the first phone that made me really, really like phones.

Then the Sidekick 2 came along, and it was amazing. Then the Sidekick 3 came along, and it was… not as amazing. Then a bevy of crappy Sidekicks came along and sort of stomped all over the Sidekick name.

Well, friend, the Sidekick is back. And it’s running Android.

Of course, to call this a “Sidekick” is sort of cheating. Danger, the team that designed the original Sidekick and built its software, has long crumbled following their acquisition by Microsoft (You remember the Kin? That was Microsoft’s misuse of the Danger team.) Matias Duarte, the man oft credited with designing the Sidekick’s awesome user interface, has moved on (though he moved on to the Android team, so his work is still here in some sense) — and so far, it looks like this thing’s running a mostly standard Android skin rather than a drastic Sidekick-themed UI overhaul. Note the aesthetic changes on the right side of the screen in the shot below.

(Oh, and this would be the first Sidekick made by Samsung. Past models were all made by Flextronics, Sharp, or Motorola)

In other words, it’s seemingly only a Sidekick in name and in form factor — but as long as they pull off that form factor (and, more importantly, that sweet, sweet keyboard) well enough, that should be enough.

The latest TouchWiz, fresh from recent stints with both Bada and Android, blurs the line with smartphones. In fact, the major difference between the Corby II and a low-end Bada phone is that you install Java apps on it, instead of Bada apps.

The J2ME platform has been around longer and many useful apps have been developed for it, while Bada OS is relatively new.

Anyway, the Samsung S3850 Corby II can’t run away from its name. The bigger screen and better specs aside, the Corby II is for beginners. So, no high-end features, thank you very much.

Why Samsung’s Galaxy Player Rivals Apple’s iPod Touch

Leveraging the success of its Galaxy S smartphone line, Samsung today introduced two models of Galaxy Player handhelds, expected to launch later this spring in the U.S. At first glance, the 4- and 5-inch devices appear to be Android-powered Samsung smartphones, complete with front and rear cameras, touch screens, and Adobe Flash support, but these don’t include a cellular radio.

Instead, the new Galaxy Player line uses Wi-Fi for connectivity, just like Apple’s iPod touch. But why would Samsung ever attempt to take on Apple’s iPod, which holds an imposing majority share in the digital audio player market?

There are a few reasons that this move makes sense, and the first one stems from the Galaxy S smartphone lineup. By selling more than 10 million of the handsets in the second half of 2010 alone, Samsung has proven that it can build a competitive smartphone. Indeed, thanks to the Galaxy S lineup, Samsung showed the most sales growth in the final quarter of 2010 compared to its peers, boasting a 438.9 percent year-over-year boost, per IDC. Why not try to mirror that success in the media player market?

A fair criticism to the Galaxy Player is that with the rise of smartphone adoption, it may not make sense to create something without cellular capabilities. However, the lack of cellular connectivity would appeal to consumers that want everything such a device has to offer except for the inflated monthly phone bill. And one only has to look to Apple to see that the iPhone hasn’t completely cannibalized iPod sales: although sales are slowly declining, in the last quarter, Apple still moved 19.4 million iPod devices.

Apple enthusiasts may rightfully suggest that Samsung’s Galaxy Player doesn’t have a shot against the iPod touch because it will always lack Apple’s iTunes ecosystem — one of the reasons perhaps that Microsoft’s Zune player is dying a slow painful death. That’s a fair point since the Galaxy Player runs on Android 2.2 (and will be upgradeable to Android 2.3), meaning it relies on Google’s Android Market. But the Amazon MP3 store can easily take the place of iTunes for music shopping. The addition of doubleTwist AirSync even allows for easy wireless media transfer and playback on Android devices.

The real secret sauce, however, may be Samsung’s own ecosystem, which it has been quietly building for the Galaxy line. The Music Hub supports subscription music in some countries, and while Samsung’s Media Hub doesn’t have the widest variety of choices yet, it is at least an option for movie and television content. And iBooks has nothing on Samsung’s Reader Hub, which truly is a one-stop destination for e-books, newspapers and magazines.

Instead of ceding the market for pocketable, connected devices with mobile browsing and application capabilities to Apple, Samsung’s clearly wants a fight, and it’s well-positioned to start one. Up to now, few could compete with the iPod touch. Thanks to a well designed smartphone and the Android platform, Samsung may be the first.

The Acer Liquid mt, everybody! Oh come on, don't be such snobs, so what if it only has an 800MHz CPU, a humble 3.6-inch screen and standard 800 x 480 resolution? It's a pocketable and delightfully rotund little device, and Acer's added a couple of tweaks that we actually found quite useful.

The biggest is a part of Acer's skin atop Android 2.2, which is set to be upgraded to Gingerbread "soon," a boilerplate promise with any device not running Google's latest. The Liquid mt offers multiple lock screens, allowing you to do things like control media and check your messaging inbox without having to unlock the phone and enter an app. It's a pretty sweet implementation, as is the simulated page-turning unlocking animation.

The handset's rear features a 5 megapixel autofocus camera and the stainless backplate that gives it its name (mt standing for "metal"), but its top is most intriguing -- it has multiple status lights integrated under the metallic surface, which light up to give you alerts for things like low battery status or unread messages. Dubious HTC Prime and HTC Ignite photos surface

Photos of a couple of new Windows Phone 7 handsets from HTC have hit the internet, known as the HTC Prime and HTC Ignite.

The HTC Ignite is a pure-touchscreen affair, with a look that's quite reminiscent of the HTC Desire, what with its curved corners and possible unibody casing.

The render has come from Chinese site XDA.cn and we're a bit concerned that the site has said the Ignite comes with a resistive touchscreen and an 800Mhz processor.

Bucket of salt

Sounds a bit fishy to us and wouldn't even meet the Windows Phone 7 minimum hardware requirements, so we're filing the specs firmly under 'Nah'. While the HTC Ignite could be a genuine device, there's no guarantee that this is it.

Meanwhile, XDA.cn has also rustled up some images of the HTC Prime, another Windows Phone 7 QWERTY slider.
If the HTC Prime is a genuine image, it looks like HTC is taking the QWERTY slider in a slimmer direction to its previous efforts like that of the HTC Desire Z and HTC 7 Pro.

The touchscreen is mooted to be a 3.7-inch WVGA affair, while the handset rocks 512MB of RAM and a 5MP camera.

Although we're more inclined to believe these specifications than we were of the HTC Ignite, we'd still recommend heavily salting the rumour before you take it.

Still, it has been six months since the first Windows Phone handsets hit; we're looking forward to the new batch which we're hoping HTC will officially reveal at CTIA next week.

The phone above is the Nokia C8 Concept Phone. It is definitely the best looking concept phone we have seen in quite sometime if not the best looking ever.

The design borrows elements from both the CSeries phones as well as the luxury 8xxx series of phones from Nokia and combines them into one device. One would say the formula is Nokia C7+8800+8600 Luna.

The whole shape is take from the Nokia C7, the silver elements from the 8800 and the glass elements from the 8600 Luna. We are not aware who the creator of this wonderful concept is as we haven’t seen an official publication anywhere.

Is the iPad a one-hit wonder or will the tablet market take off broadly in 2011? That's the question Motorola's Xoom tablet will likely answer.

And this broader market, of course, includes Hewlett-Packard's WebOS tablet and RIM's PlayBook, among others. But Motorola's Xoom stands as the biggest potential consumer rival to the iPad 2 because Motorola is a first-tier supplier that has already competed mightily against Apple in the smartphone market (think Droid) and, more importantly, packs in plenty of eagerly awaited goodies, including: Google's Android Honeycomb operating system for tablets, a powerful dual-core processor, a high-resolution (1,280x800) display, dual cameras, and lest we forget, the Verizon 3G (and soon-to-come 4G) network.

That said, tucked into a research note I received on Friday from Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, was this morsel: "The magnitude of tablet opportunity beyond Apple is unclear." And he also writes that "we believe that iPad volumes in the current quarter will dry up ahead of the iPad 2 launch."

So, will we see long lines at Verizon stores the day of launch, like the iPad? Or has the tablet novelty worn off enough that it's not a line-forming impulse-buy anymore? And/or is it principally a phenomenon linked to the cachet of Apple products?

Based on my own experience, I believe that the media tablet is more than a one-hit wonder. The sheer utility of my iPad has cut my laptop use almost in half, as I've written before. (And the iPad trumps my iPhone too, in a number of respects, like mapping.)

So, what kind of numbers do we need to see? Considering that the market is still nascent, that's a tough call. Kumar said that Apple shipped between 6 and 7 million iPads in the most recent quarter, "with the lower end (Wi-Fi) dominating the mix." With Apple as the high-water mark, we can't expect those kinds of numbers from Motorola initially.

Asia-based rumors claim Motorola is aiming to ship as many as 800,000 out of the gate and RIM a bit more. Those would be healthy numbers.

And Motorola appears to be doing all it can do to make interesting accessories, too--like this speaker dock and Bluetooth keyboard, among other add-ons.

Who knows, the tablet, in one form or another, could eventually make the laptop obsolete. That would result in huge, market-upending numbers. But I'll leave that highly-speculative analysis for next year.

Sony Ericsson isn't ready to cede the retinal screen race. The Xperia Arc is the manufacturer's newest Android device and runs its new Bravia Engine.

This large picture still does little justice to the screen of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. Like Samsung’s Super AMOLED phone and a whole crop of new phones hoping to compete with the iPhone 4 “Retina Display,” the Xperia Arc has a bright and vibrant high-end “Reality Display.” Buzzwords aside, it is a very nice 4.2-inch, 854×480 pixel screen. It’s also scratch and shatter resistant, thanks to a form of mineral glass–a type of glass used to make watch crystals.

The phone runs Android 2.3 with Sony shell on top, the Bravia Engine, which dolls up the interface, making it look more like Sony’s line of TVs and the PS3 with more blues and windowpane-like menus. Every manufacturer feels compelled to add its own flavor to Android, but Sony does an especially slick job, besting Motorola’s Blur interface and maybe even HTC Sense–though Sense has far more custom widgets to choose from.

Physically, the Xperia Arc is pretty thin and has an “inhale” design where the center is actually thinner than the top and bottom. Representatives told us that, at its center, the device is thinner than the iPhone 4. Impressive, I suppose, but the plastic casing can’t match the solid feel of the iPhone 4. Nevertheless, the design fit surprisingly well in my hand. Another notable change from most Android phones is the addition of actual physical Home, Back, and Menu buttons. Representatives also made a point about the quality of the low-light pictures it takes, but we haven’t had a chance to test this feature due to the bright lights on the show floor.

Like most Sony Ericsson phones, the Xperia Arc is having a difficult time finding a carrier to support it in the United States. No pricing, carrier plans, or release dates have been announced. The most likely candidate is AT&T, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Dell Venue gets official and unlocked

Dell just announced the Venue at CES, and US customers will be able to get the handset unlocked from Dell.com. The company is tempted to have a T-Mobile version, but the unlocked model won't have the T-Mobile 3G bands.

The specs for the device include a 4.1 inch AMOLED screen, 8-megapixel camera, Android 2.2 and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 8250 processor. Meanwhile at the Dell keynote, Engadget reported that the Dell Streak 7 will be sold 'globally', and the Gorilla glass covered slate will eventually be updated to Honeycomb (Android 2.3). Both phones aren't given launch dates or price points.

Samsung Galaxy Tab gets LTE upgrade

In what must be the rush to get the fastest data connection, Samsung is revealing that they have an upgraded version of the Galaxy Tab. It's exclusive to Verizon, and has an LTE modem and supports 3G. An additional 200MHz is added to the Hummingbird processor for a grand total of 1.2GHz, and bumping the camera from 3-megapixel to 5. It's on display in CES now, but no word on pricing or a release date.

HKGolden, a Hong Kong mobile phone forum has posted several images of the Xperia Play or Sony PlayStation phone which is also known as Zeus.

Compared to the earliest leak we covered from Engadget, it added the Xperia and PlayStation logo at the bottom of the game-controller slider. We are not too certain whether Sony did improve its technical hardware in the device. Hopefully, Sony will give us some insight on this coming CES or else we shall for wait for MWC in February.

Fujitsu rolls out Tablet computers

Fujitsu unveiled the Lifebook T580 and TH550, the company's first Tablet computers to feature a three-way input method.

Users can write with a stylus, type on the spill-resistant keyboard or just use the touchscreen. Fujitsu said the Tablet computers use a dual digitiser technology that optimises the display for both stylus use and finger gestures.

The devices also feature a four-point multitouch technology that allows users to maximise or minimise windows by sweeping three fingers on the screen upwards or downwards.

By using four fingers, users can highlight pictures and have it uploaded to Facebook or Twitter.

Each of the device weigh 1.4kg and have a 10.1in HD touchscreen that is designed to enrich the user's multimedia, visual and mobile experience, the company said.

The T580 and TH550, which run on Windows 7 Professional/Home Premium, use an Intel HD Graphics chip and also have HDMI and VGA outputs, so users can easily hook it up to a HDTV.

Despite the small size, the T580 can be configured to include an Intel Core i3-380UM or Core i5-560UM processor. The TH550 can be configured with a Core i3-380UM or Pentium U5400 processor.

The low-voltage processors allow the devices to run up to 7.2 hours on a single battery charge, the company said. The prices for the T580 and TH550 are RM3,988 and RM3,688 respectively.

The highly rumored BlackBerry Bold 9780 is almost official - it has just been spotted on the Vodafone Netherlands web page and should hit the market soon. And while we've already seen the smartphone before, its specs sheet was still missing. Up until now.

Now, thanks to Vodafone Netherlands, we can finally take a closer look at the BlackBerry Bold 9780 specs list and see what's under the phone's hood.

Sadly, there is still no information on the thing's processor, but the rest is all there on the Vodafone website. Even the price - the Bold 9780 is expected to start selling for 509 euro commitment-free price.

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is powered by the recently introduced BlackBerry OS 6.0 and packs a hardware QWERTY keyboard, 512MB of RAM, a built-in GPS receiver and support for 3G with HSPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

LG Optimus S, first hands-on!

The low-end Android game just got real, folks, with Sprint's introduction of the LG Optimus S, a $50 (on-contract, post-rebate) Android slatephone running Froyo on a 3.2-inch HVGA screen, with mobile hotspot functionality for up to five devices, 802.11 b/g WiFi and a 600MHz processor to run the whole shebang. As you'd expect in a world of 1GHz smartphones at the $200 price point, it's not quite up to spec, but that doesn't keep it from having a super-solid build, durable and weighty, that belies its low price.

It honestly feels much like a Nexus One in the hand, though with nice big physical buttons instead of capacitive function keys, and of course a lower-quality LCD screen. There's an auto-focusing 3.2 megapixel camera on the back and a fairly responsive capacitive touchscreen up front, and though browsing was a little painful on the low-res screen, the Android 2.2 device sped through the UI without skipping a beat. If this device impresses as much after we throw it through a barrage of tests, I'll be hard to imagine ever spending a cent on a regular ol' featurephone again.

LG Optimus T hands-on (update: no WiFi calls)

The low-end LG Optimus S that wowed us earlier the other day has a magenta twin -- the LG Optimus T, headed to T-Mobile with very similar hardware. Considering that both carriers' phones will come in similar shades of purple and black, you could easily be excused for confusing the two -- aside from a prominent logo and the physical button arrangement, they've got the exact same build.

That's not a bad thing, mind you, as it means the Optimus T is similarly solid as a rock, but there are a few differences here and there, like the lack of dedicated camera and voice buttons this time round. Whether it's extra bloat (of which there's some) or a slower chip, the T's also not as wonderfully lag-free as the S, though both phones would handily beat most of the other low-end Androids we've seen.

The 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen's just as responsive, though the physical buttons here aren't quite as nice -- we prefer Sprint's distinct, textured keys to the slick plastic rocker for Home and Back and the Menu and Search buttons here. We weren't able to download Quadrant on the T for benchmarking like we did for its sister phone nor verify the same exact specs inside, but paging through menus we spotted mobile hotspot functionality and WiFi calling, just as originally foretold, not to mention support for old-school FM radio. Now we just wait to see if T-Mobile follows Sprint's lead and offers the phone at a similarly fantastic price.

The first word that came to our mind when handling the HTC 7 Mozart was "classy." The aluminum unibody construction conveys a rare sense of rigidity and durability to this phone, while its overall curvature, 3.7-inch LCD screen, and ergonomics invoke memories of the company's Desire and Nexus One Android products. Which is no bad thing, particularly if you thought the Desire was a fine phone that could do with a more upmarket enclosure.

We feel like this melting of the Legend's aluminum shell and the Desire's proportions is a match made in heaven, and Windows Phone 7 responsive ways have done little to dissuade us. The whole 7 Mozart package feels like a perfectly pitched (we had to!) ploy for the mainstream market, with its good looks, slick profile, and sharp-looking OS. The somewhat generic hardware on offer is a spectral presence hanging over all of HTC phones at this launch, but we're too in love with the 7 Mozart build quality to care right now. Samsung Omnia 7 i8700 and LG Optimus 7 officially unveiled a bit early

There are still a few hours until Microsoft kicks off its Windows Phone 7 launch event, but Samsunng and LG have went ahead and already announced two WP7 devices: the Samsung Omnia 7 i8700 and the LG Optimus 7.

The Omnia 7 i8700 has been announced by Samsung Russia, which unveiled some of the smartphone’s features, including: 4 inch Super AMOLED WVGA display, “Metro UI”, Wi-Fi, Xbox Live, Zune, 5MP camera with LED flash, 8GB of on-board memory, and 1GHz Qualcomm processor.

The price and launch date of the Samsung Omnia 7 are yet to be disclosed.

The Optimus 7 has been mistakenly announced in a post over at LG UK’s official blog. The post has been quickly removed, but Pocket-lint managed to gather some details.

The new LG Windows Phone 7 handset features a 3.8 inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display, 3G, Wi-Fi, 5MP camera with 720p video recording, 1GHz processor, and 16GB of internal memory. The Optimus 7 also comes with Play-To (a DLNA multimedia sharing platform), a Voice-to-Text feature, and a Scansearch app that lets users “access real-time information about shopping, dining, weather, entertainment and banking, bringing together your online and offline worlds for an easier life.” Xbox Live and Zune are obviously included, too.

Like in the case of Samsung’s Omnia 7, the launch date and price of the LG Optimus 7 are not known. We’ll bring more details as soon as we have them.

Nokia C5-03 announced, brings full connectivity on the cheap

The increasingly complicated Nokia model numbering scheme just received a new entry - meet the Nokia C5-03. It's a Symbian^1 touch phone with 5MP camera, Wi-Fi and GPS and it's really lightweight - it weighs only 93 grams.

The Nokia C5-03 runs Symbian^1, which is to say Symbian S60 5th edition. Anyway, it has a 3.2" nHD (360x640) resistive touchscreen and it measures 105.8 x 51.0 x 13.8 mm.

The new C5-03 flaunts a 5MP camera (fixed-focus) and comes with a 2GB microSD card in the box. Wi-Fi and GPS are on-board and of course Ovi Maps with free voice-guided navigation. For mobile connectivity, the Nokia C5-03 offers quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band 3G with HSDPA (10.2Mbps) and HSUPA (2Mbps).

The Nokia C5-03 has a 1000mAh battery, which promises impressive battery life - up to 25 days of standby, 11.5 hours of talk time and up to 35 hours of music playback (19.5 hours if you're using a Bluetooth headset).

Nokia makes E7 QWERTY slider official: 'beautiful and all business' (update: specs)

Nokia's just unveiled its aluminum-clad E7 QWERTY slider handset. One of the new family of Symbian^3 devices, it has a 4-inch tilting touchscreen display on the front and an 8 megapixel imager capable of 720p video on the back. Yummy. It's said to be the best business device Nokia, or anyone else, has ever produced and comes with the touted ability to create PowerPoint slides on the go.

The E7 also features Nokia's new ClearBlack Display sorcery and is expected to ship before the end of the year in exchange for €495 (before taxes and subsidies). You'll find the full press release after the break.

Update: By now you'll have noticed that the E7 and N8 are almost identical outside of the E7 4-inch display and slightly bigger chassis required to host it. There are a few other differences, though. For example, The 12.9mm-thin N8 has an FM transmitter and 2mm charging connector unlike the slightly thicker 13.6mm E7. The E7's bigger display also trims back the reported talk time to 540 minutes (the N8 does 720 minutes).

Of course, as part of the business focused E-series, the E7 also features a healthy set of preloaded apps including Mail for Exchange (with MS Outlook sync of contacts, calendar, and notes and multiple calendars with meeting request support), IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, Quickoffice dynamic premium, Adobe PDF reader, and F-Secure Anti-theft. The N8 counters with the better camera and stereo mic, thanks to a big 1/1.83-inch 12 megapixel sensor and Xenon flash that require some extra girth on the backend. Oh, and no MicroSD slot on the E7 -- you get 16GB and that's it.
